Why is Xiamen called CuO?

Xiamen is not called CuO, but it is a custom in Xiamen to call a place CuO. Cuo is ancient Chinese, which means house and can also be extended to home. The word CuO is also used to indicate a specific place of residence. Where there are lots, it used to be a village. This name is also found in Minnan dialect, Fuzhou dialect, Putian dialect and Chaoshan dialect.

"CuO" in Fuzhou dialect refers to the house where people live. For example, "turn around" means "go home".

"Cuo" in Putian dialect has the same meaning as above, for example, "Cuo" means "going home". "Li CuO" means "home".

In Minnan, "CuO" refers to a house. For example, "Sun CuO, Lu CuO" refers to "places where people named Sun live in concentration and places where people named Lu live in concentration". "Dacuo" in "Shell CuO" and "Lindaocuo" refers to the traditional architecture in southern Fujian.
