It is Ding An's specialty to write sadness with forceful pen, which can best reflect his unique aesthetic character of "sword" and "flute". This is the case with these two Sitting Nights, and so is the case with the following two Autumn Hearts. If we read in pairs, we can have a deeper understanding of the outstanding features of Ding An's poems.
This group of poems was written in the autumn of the third year of Daoguang (1823). The author used the books in the cupboard as the proofreader of the National History Museum, and it was worthwhile to fail the fourth exam. Loneliness, anger and strange feelings surged up, and he couldn't sleep at night. Therefore, this chapter is full of thinking and imagination. The word "sadness" is pointed out at the beginning of the first poem, which is the key to a group of poems, and "it is better to look at the blue sky from afar" broadens the horizon of thinking about the life of the universe, so the tone of the whole poem suddenly transcends the gains and losses of chickens and insects in one city and one place, but presents a profound poetic picture and philosophical implication. "One mountain" is a peculiar language in Ding An's poems. It is not so much a night from a distance as a spiritual "night". "Mountain", "hill", "morning" and "emperor sitting" are all images of human culture, and their precipitous momentum and sharp thinking have been greatly appreciated by Kang Youwei and others. In five or six sentences, the word "like" and "long" is unique, full of accusations and indignation, which shows the author's views on current politics, especially on talent issues. The sentence "I will never get tired of Hunan in my life" is an inversion of Du Fu's poem "In late spring, Jiangling sent Ma Daqing and chased him to Quexia". The words "Shen" and "Yi Huan" in the first pair of couplets in the second book are extremely alert, vividly depicting Ding An's personality style of "one mountain protruding", but isn't this outstanding figure who loves talents all over the world a far cry from his ideal just because he was caught in the wild waves and informality of entering the world at an early age? But what is the author's ideal? In ancient times, the so-called "three immortals" and "one person gets the Tao, and chickens and dogs ascend to heaven" are not in their eyes! What he expects is a kind of "soul-stirring", a blend of "emotion" and "talent" related to Zen. But the so-called "retreat from Zen is to convert to the imperial clan style, but it is difficult to sell." Does the poet really believe in Zen? This is just a desperate escape! Those beautiful women like jade and firm but gentle like a rainbow are the realm he deeply wants to go to! The author is heroic, but the word "in case" reveals an incomprehensible "sadness" and desolation. Sitting alone in the middle of the night always starts with "what's surging" and ends with "nostalgia for the past"!
Zhang Yuanshan (one of the authors of On Qi Characters) said that Li Bai wrote "sorrow" as "ecstasy" and thought Taibai's poems were too deep, not samadhi. Let's say, for example, Gong Zizhen wrote "sadness" in such a colorful way that it was not too embarrassing after it was too white.
