A Brief Analysis of Two Poems by Su Lin, a Poet in Song Dynasty

The quatrains in traditional poetry genre are composed of four sentences, which are divided into archaic quatrains and metrical poems. However, Su Lin, a poet in the Song Dynasty, wrote only two sentences in his masterpiece Duanju, which is the laziest poet in history.

However, once this poem of Su Lin was published, it was highly praised. These two poems, after being compressed, have also formed an idiom. It can be seen that Su Lin's Interrogation is a "genuine" masterpiece.

In the Song Dynasty, Yu Wenbao recorded in the Record of Clear Night that he recommended all officers and men in Qiantang, a public town in Fan Wenzheng, but Su Lin did not record it separately, but presented a poem: "The moon is near the water tower, and flowers and trees are easy to spring in the sun." This means that Fan Zhongyan recommended his subordinates and was promoted or promoted when he was guarding Hangzhou. Su Lingang, the only inspection department, was not in front of him when he was on a business trip and failed to get Fan Zhongyan's recommendation. After Su Lin came back, she presented this poem, and finally got her wish and got the chance of promotion.

Reaching the moon first by getting close to water,

Xiangyang flowers and trees are easy to spring.

The first sentence, "the water tower gets the moon first", means that the water tower can see the projection of the moon in the water first because it is not blocked by any trees or the rest of the tower. Judging from the meaning of poetry alone, it undoubtedly highlights the importance of occupying a geographical position. Su Lin wants a promotion, so the implication here is that Fan Zhongyan only promotes people around him. From this poem, we can also see the implicit beauty of poetry.

The second sentence "Flowers and trees facing the sun are easy to meet spring" refers to flowers and trees pointing to the sun, and the light is naturally much better, so they germinate early and are most likely to form a spring scene. This poem is also extremely implicit. Flowers and trees naturally refer to man's forest, and the sun refers to Fan Zhongyan. That is to say, only under your brilliance and leadership will we have a bright future. Although this poem is well written, it may be flattering. But Surin's goal was achieved.

With the spread of Su Lin's two poems, after compression, an idiom "Get the moon first by being close to the water" was formed, which means that you get priority because you are located in a convenient place. However, this idiom also has a derogatory meaning, which is often used to satirize the situation where you take advantage of some convenience to get care and take the lead in making profits.
