Originally, it refers to the 18 dharma protectors recorded in the seven buddha Eight Bodhisattvas Great Darani Mantra Sutra, the sage of Galand: "The 18 dharma protectors have their own aliases. Beautiful voice. Two Sanskrit sounds. Three-day drum. Siqiao. Five people lamented beauty. The sixth is Guangmiao. Seven Lei Yin. The voices of eight teachers. Nine wonders. Ten Brahma rings. Eleven sounds. Twelve Buddha slaves. Thirteen sighs. Fourteen people opened their eyes wide. Fifteen pairs of wonderful eyes. Sixteen people listen carefully. Seventeen people look. Eighteen times view "and other eighteen dharma gods.
Later, the three heroes of Gion Jing She, namely, the King of Persia, Prince Geto and the widowed old man, were also included in the list of saints in Galand, which increased the number of saints in Galand to 2 1 person.
However, today's Buddhist Dojo metropolis in China has shaped the Galand Bodhisattva into the shape of Guan Yu, instead of the original 2 1 Galand sage.
There is no record in Buddhist scriptures that Guan Yu is the Bodhisattva of Galand. Before the Sui Dynasty, there was no such custom.
Legend has it that the wise master, the founder of Tiantai Sect, once entered Yuquan Mountain in Jingzhou and met Guan Yu, who became a spectre and clamored for his head everywhere. Guan Yu was resentful, and the wise master comforted him and told him Buddhism. Guan Yu immediately converted to be ordained and became a Buddhist disciple, vowing to be the protector of Buddhism. From then on, the temple of Tiantai Sect began to worship Guan Yu.
Since Tiantai Temple started to worship Guan Yu, various monasteries have followed suit. Gradually, Guan Yu became known as the Bodhisattva of Galand and became the two protectors of Buddhist temples in China. Different from the worship of Guan Yu by other religions, according to the custom, Guan Yu, who is shaped as the protector of Buddhism, will have an extra ribbon on his body and float around the idol without wind. If there is no such statue of Guan Yu, it is not a Buddha statue.
