In the early morning, when the sky is full of morning glow, I am about to embark on my return journey. Looking up from the river, you can see Baidi City surrounded by colorful clouds, as if it were among the clouds. The scenery is gorgeous! Jiangling, which is thousands of miles away, has been reached in one day.
The cries of apes on both sides of the strait echo endlessly. While the cries of the apes still echo in my ears, the brisk boat has sailed past the endless mountains. Extended information
Creative background:
This poem was written in March of the second year of Qianyuan (759) by Emperor Suzong of the Tang Dynasty. In the first year of Qianyuan (758), Li Bai was exiled to Yelang because of the case of Yongwang Li Lin. In the spring of the following year, when he was traveling to Baidi City, he suddenly received the news of the pardon. The poet was overjoyed and immediately took a boat east to Jiangling. This poem was written when the poet left Baidi City and took a boat down the river to Jiangling after being pardoned. Therefore, the poem is titled "White Emperor Goes Down to Jiangling".
Predecessors once thought that this poem was written by Li Bai when he came out of Shu in his youth. However, based on the poetic meaning of "A Thousand Miles to Jiangling Return in a Day" and Li Bai's inference from Jiangling's trip to the Three Gorges, this poem should have been written when he was pardoned and returned from exile.
