About the author:
Han Shan (date of birth and death unknown), with unknown name and nickname, was a native of Chang'an (now Xi'an, Shaanxi), the capital of the Tang Dynasty. Born into a family of officials, he failed many entrance examinations and was forced to become a monk. After he was 30, he lived in seclusion in Tiantai Mountain in eastern Zhejiang. He died at the age of more than 100 years old. Yan Zhenfei's "Han Shanzi's Life Experience" corroborated Hanshan's poems with a large number of historical materials such as "Northern History" and "Sui Shu", pointing out that Hanshan was Yang Wen, the son of Yang Zan, a descendant of the Sui royal family. He was jealous and ostracized by the royal family. Influenced by Buddhist thought, he escaped into Buddhism and hid in the cold rocks of Tiantai Mountain.
This mythological poet of the Tang Dynasty was once ignored by the world. However, with the advent of the 20th century, his poems were increasingly accepted and widely circulated. Just as his poem says: "Some people laugh at my poetry, but my poetry is elegant. If you don't bother with Zheng's notes, how can you use Mao Gong's interpretation." As one of the few vernacular poets in the Tang Dynasty in China, he has been favored since the 20th century. Respected by Japanese scholars.
Since 1905 (the 38th year of Meiji), Hanshan’s poems have been reprinted in Japan, and more than a dozen scholars have done a lot of research, annotation and translation of his poems. The famous Japanese novelist Ogai Mori (1862-1922) once wrote a novel called "What I Found in Hanshan" based on the preface of Lu Qiuyin in the collection of Hanshan Poems. Many critics consider it one of his best works. .
