Appreciation of Zhao Gu's poem "Staying in the Chuguo Temple with Love"

Staying in Chuguo Temple is pregnant

Tang Dynasty: Zhao Gu

The wind moves the lotus Loneliness is fragrant, the smoke is broken and the moon is shining brightly.

In the evening of Hansheng, the waves shook the walls of the temple, and the red leaves of the sparse forest covered the bed.

The geese seem to frighten the Nanpu River, and the clouds want to protect the frost in the North Tower.

The pines and chrysanthemums on the riverside are all gone, and the night in Chang'an in August is long.

The bright moons set off each other under the vast gray-white sky, creating a lonely and vast night.

The nights in autumn are always particularly cold, and a sudden chill arises in my heart. A sense of desolation comes over me, as if the blue waves of the river are shaking the Chuguo Temple, and the red leaves outside the house are also spinning alone. Some of them fell to the ground by mistake and fell into the house by mistake, scattered on the bed.

The sound of banging from somewhere startled the sleeping geese in the grass. The wild geese flew up from Nanpu one after another. The dark clouds in the sky shrouded the tall north tower, as if they wanted to cover the tiles. Cold frost on slices.

I am afraid that the original pines and chrysanthemums on the riverside have withered and become desolate. I wonder how to spend the long nights in Chang'an in August.

Comments

Chuguo Temple: According to "Youyang Zazu", the temple is located in Jinchangfang, Chang'an. There are gold and bronze statues of King Ai of Chu in the temple.

Bi: One is blue, and the blue waves are speaking.

Nanpu: In ancient poetry, Nanpu usually refers to a farewell place by the water, such as "Changting", which became synonymous with farewell places in the Tang Dynasty.

Bei Tower: I don’t know what it refers to. In the Tang poem, Li Bai’s "Ascending the North Tower of Xie Tiao in Xuancheng in Autumn" contains the sentence "Whoever reads the North Tower will feel grateful to the Duke in the wind".

Songs and chrysanthemums by the river: refers to the pine and chrysanthemums in the hometown. The ancients often used pine and chrysanthemums to refer to noble character. It is implicitly used from Tao Yuanming's "Return and Lai Xi Ci" "Three paths are deserted, but pines and bamboos still exist".

Appreciation

Through the above-mentioned reading and understanding of the "vernacular translation", we have a general understanding of the whole poem. This part mainly analyzes and interprets the imagery, environment and emotions. We conduct appreciation and analysis through the first couplet, chin couplet, neck chain and tail couplet:

In the first couplet, the poet chose four images of cold wind, fading lotus, broken smoke and waning moon. The image of the declining lotus indicates that it is the time of late summer and early autumn. The word "lonely" is a personification of rhetoric used to describe the lingering fragrance of the declining lotus. In fact, it is the poet's own inner loneliness and drifting away. The sadness of being helpless. The ingenious combination of the two images of "broken smoke" and "waning moon" creates a bleak autumn night with misty clouds and mist, setting a sentimental and desolate tone for the whole poem.

The most prominent image in the couplet is "red leaves". The red leaves drifting alone and spinning helplessly, falling from the trees, seem to be describing the autumn scenery, giving people a sense of sadness for autumn, but in fact they are a symbol of the poet's personality. The red leaves are the poet, and the poet is the red leaves. It shows the poet's loneliness without company, the depression of life, and the sadness of wandering around. Seeing this scene, I felt sad, and my heart was filled with helplessness towards reality.

Not surprisingly, the images of "wild geese", "clouds", "Nanpu" and "Beilou" are used in the neck couplet. This image is not unfamiliar in the poems we have read. This image The selections have one obvious similarity, that is, the commonly used images in "farewell poems". So who does the poet who is staying alone in Chuguo Temple say goodbye to at this time? Why separate? Where will they go after separation? This series of issues should be the focus of this association. First of all, we know that as the first note in "Annotation of Words and Sentences" says, "There are golden bronze statues of King Ai of Chu and others in the temple of Chu State". Combined with the poet's life, the poet has great ambitions. He traveled around when he was young and participated in many events. Official selection examination, running for fame. It shows that the poet has an ambition to serve the country and display his talents. However, the frustration of repeated exams and the loneliness of being ignored made him feel hesitant and depressed. What will be the difference at this time? Not only are we saying goodbye to Chu State Temple, we are also saying goodbye to our past and our original intentions. Will the passage of good years, the futility of travel, the loneliness and hardship, the bleak and confused prospects, etc., make him make a different choice?

What we need to pay attention to in the last couplet is the analysis of "Songs and Chrysanthemums by the River". For example, the understanding of "Songs and Chrysanthemums by the River" in the "Annotation of Words and Sentences" refers to the pines and chrysanthemums in his hometown. During his wandering, the poet recalled the pines and chrysanthemums in his hometown. From this, we can know that the poet's homesickness is beyond words; the pines and chrysanthemums are also of noble character. The symbol also shows that the poet does not want to go with the world. In the last couplet, the poet once again points out the time and place. There is no one to talk to during the long night, and he feels lonely and depressed.

In summary, in the appreciation and analysis of this poem, the author mainly focuses on words, images, rhetorical methods and expression techniques, etc., and appreciates the poet's emotional expression in the poem. The opinions are only the author's personal views. I hope everyone can criticize and correct me for continuous improvement.
