Gao Shi's poem "Send Judge Dong"

Tang dynasty: Gao Shi

I heard that you are going out with a sword and taking your friends and relatives.

The shogunate is in the middle, and the general is the master of the sage.

It often rains and snows in the border areas, and sandstorms burst on the way out of the border.

The security policy should contribute, and the country should not cherish its life.

Distinguish and appreciate

Farewell to frontier fortress is a common theme in Gao Shi's frontier fortress poems. With extremely simple language and profound friendship, this work encourages friends not to bid farewell to the hardships of the journey, display their talents and make contributions to the border.

The first verse of this poem points out that a friend is about to travel far away. The word "leaning on the sword" is the key word, which not only makes "leaving" and "parting friendship" tragic, but also implies that a friend's identity is to join the army, indicating that a friend left to bid farewell to the border. "Go" means a long way; Farewell to relatives is even more inevitable. But using the word "leaning on the sword" not only points out that this kind of behavior is dedicated to the army, but also a generous farewell trip.

The second couplet wrote that a friend went to the border to be a judge and worked in the shogunate, and the general took talent as his teacher. These two sentences inherit the first couplet, which indicates that friends can give full play to their literary talents and get the appreciation and sincere reception of the Lord when they go to the border. As the poet wrote in the poem "Judge Biefeng": "Talented people are guests, generals are thirsty for talents, and they know the shogunate far away, and ministers are getting better and better." Judge Dong, with his talent, defected to the thirsty general, and he will look down on the shogunate general with his graceful posture. The poet showed a feeling of jealousy in his wishes. This is the poet's idea of friends going to the frontier fortress, and it is also a praise and encouragement to Dong Zhongshu.

There are also two words printed on the neckline: imagine a friend on his way to the border. First "off", then "jam", followed by "go", specifically writing a long way; "It's raining and snowing" and "It's windy and dusty" lead to the last sentence, which truthfully describes the cold of the frontier fortress. It can be seen that the journey is hard. The poet has been out of the Great Wall many times and has a personal experience of the cold in the border area, which has been mentioned more than once in his poems. For example, "Guanshan Road is surrounded by rain and snow on three sides" (judge don't be windy), such as "Mo Yan's customs are extremely congested, and the clouds and snow are still endless" (three songs leading Qing Yi army into Juyong), such as "The north is chilly, and Guanshan is free from suffering" (answer Hou Shaofu) and so on. Therefore, the phrase "it is raining and snowing nearby, and there is dust in the traffic jam" is not an exaggeration, but a description of the scenery in the traffic jam, thus forcing out two sentences at the end of the poem: "You must use long-term strategies, and men should not neglect them."

William encouraged Mo Wei, a friend, to stand the hardships of rain, snow, wind and dust, and contribute to the frontier defense and the motherland. Don't care about your own body, display long-term strategies, and make contributions to the forefront. It is a kind of brushwork that first suppresses and then promotes, which makes poetry make waves. "Men don't take care of themselves" is a comfort to their friends, but it also reflects the poet's desire to make meritorious service to the country. He answered the question of "going" at the beginning with a high emotional appeal, and ended the whole poem with this, making the work appear smooth and vigorous, without the parting state of children in general farewell poems.

The first couplet was actually written in front of you, which was a bit embarrassing; Erlian predicts that the mood will turn sharply in the future; Sanlian wrote about the journey, which was miserable; William advised his friends to make meritorious deeds, and his literary potential was very high. The whole poem is ups and downs, ambitious and admirable.
