Source: Tang Wei Wu Ying's A Message from Huaishang to an Old Friend in Liangchuan.

I lived in a foreign country and landed in Jianghan. I will never forget meeting you in a foreign land and getting drunk hand in hand.

Whole poem

Greet my old friend Liangchuan on the Huaihe River.

[Tang] Wei.

We used to be partners on the river and Han Shang, and every time we met, we would get drunk.

Since we left each other, we drifted like clouds, and ten years passed like running water, until we finally got together again.

We talked and laughed, just like before, except that the hair on our heads is a little gray now.

Then, why not come together, and all of us will sail along the Huaihe River facing the autumn mountain? .

Appreciation of whole poem

When I was in Chuzhou, I met an old friend of Liangzhou and liked to write this poem. Liangzhou in the Tang Dynasty, now Nanzheng County, Shaanxi Province, was in the upper reaches of the Hanshui River. Therefore, the first couplet recalled that he met this old friend when he was a guest in Jianghan area. Every time we meet, he always goes home drunk. The second couplet says: what people do is like floating clouds. Since parting, time has flowed like water, and ten years have passed in an instant. The third connector said, "Now we meet again on the Huaihe River. Although our laughter is still the same as that of ten years ago, our hair is sparse and gray. The fourth is hypothetical question-and-answer grammar. What is the reason? Why don't you go back to Liangzhou? Oh, it's probably because of the beautiful scenery of Qiushan Mountain in Huaishang that you can't bear to go home.

This poem uses simple words, has no thought-provoking words, and has a distinct and natural thought process. Translation into prose is also prose poetry. It represents the style of Wei's five-character poems. Throughout the ages, literary critics have used the word "light" to summarize this style, whether it is ancient or elegant or idle. In short, it is a straightforward and simple expression of the content of words and ideas. Words are not carved and thoughts are not obscure.
