Notes on Nalan Xingde's Poem Singing the Cage Warbler

Yonglongying

Where is the golden guest? He lives in the green curtain.

There are fears and dreams here, and there are no plans for the spring breeze.

Wandering between the beam and the swallow, who builds a nest in the well?

Empty will cloud the road wing, sealing hate in the carving cage.

To annotate ...

Jinyike: Yingying's feathers are yellow, so it's called Jinyike. Habitat: Busy and restless. Emerald curtain: Emerald gauze curtain. The oriole was imprisoned in a noble family. Manzhu: It is said that swallows and birds living in buttonwood can fly freely and live in peace, which makes the oriole envious. Silence: the original meaning is to remain silent. Hold a grudge: hold a grudge. Carved birdcage: A beautifully decorated birdcage.

Comment and analysis

This is also a poem about things, a metaphor for life experience and feelings. The poet uses the image of a caged warbler to describe his living condition: he looks gorgeous and luxurious, but he can only be locked in a golden cage all day, losing his freedom. He has soaring wings, and even the buttonwood trees outside can't fly, not as free as the swallows between the beams. This poem not only expresses sympathy for the oriole who lost his freedom, but also expresses resentment at all kinds of constraints he suffered. The poet's desire to get rid of the identity of court guards and show his skills is extremely urgent.
