Jiangyin Customs of Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice Festival began in the Han Dynasty and flourished in the Song Dynasty. The day is the shortest on this day, and the days become longer and longer thereafter. There is a folk saying in Jiangyin that "the winter solstice is as big as the new year" and "the winter solstice is as small as the new year". The night after the winter solstice is called "winter solstice night". As usual, people have to fast at home and worship their ancestors. During the "Winter Night Dinner" on the night of the Winter Solstice, some families invite relatives and friends to have a dinner. In the past, landowners dismissed their long-term workers on this day, so there is a folk saying that "on the night of the Winter Solstice, the rich eat all night, and the poor freeze all night." There is also a custom in Xixiang, Qingyang and other places in Jiangyin that one of the dishes for winter night dinner must include roasted tofu with scallions. As the saying goes: "If you want to be rich, eat a bowl of roasted tofu with scallions the night before the winter solstice." "Onion" means lush and fluffy. Vigorous, "tofu" is homophonic to "duifu" in Jiangyin dialect. "Clean winter solstice and dirty year" means that if there is rain or snow before and after the winter solstice, the festival will be sunny; otherwise, there will be rain or snow on the festival night and the roads will be sloppy and muddy.
