The Original Text and Appreciation of Wang Anshi in Early Summer

Wang Anshi

There is a bend in the hut in Liang Shi, and the water is splashing.

Warm wind gives birth to wheat on sunny days, and green grass wins flowers.

Some people think that Wang Anshi's poems are "thin in meaning", while others say that his poems "have no room for subtlety" and "only know clever words as poems". As far as some poems are concerned, it makes sense, but it cannot be generalized. For example, this poem "Early Summer is Things" is quite implicit and meaningful.

The first sentence "The hut in Liang Shi has a bend" describes the scenery on the shore. "Liang Shi", stone bridge. "Curved ridge" refers to the winding seashore, which borrows a Chinese word from Zuo Si's Five Degrees Fu, that is, "left curved ridge, right face ridge". The poet has a poem "Bend", which says, "The disabled can escape in summer, and the north window bends in the north." The meaning of "bend" is the same as this, which can prove each other. Here, just like the three close-ups of a movie, the poet introduces the three images of "Liang Shi", "hut" and "bend" to the readers without any description, so that the readers can form a picture by themselves. This picture is roughly like this: on a winding river bank, there is a stone bridge, near the bridge, and there are several huts. This painting is simple and empty, with no flowers and birds, no gorgeous colors, no characters' activities and no traces of "clever words". This hut may be a farmhouse. "There were few idle people in the countryside in April", and everyone was busy with work, so I saw no one in the hut. The poet did not explain. I'm afraid he intends to leave readers room for imagination.

In the second sentence, "the splashing of running water is two vicious forces", the poet's observation turned from shore to running water, and he wrote the momentum of running water from near to far. "Glug" can be understood as the sound of running water. However, there is a saying in Gu Yuefu's Mulan Ci: "Only the splash of the Yellow River" can also be understood as running water; There is a saying in Shen Yue's poem "Gathering Mountains in the Morning" that "the water is long and the water is splashing", which is also the same reason. You can also combine the above two understandings. The "vicious" here refers to the hillside. "Cold rice noodles alone" means that I saw the stream splashing towards the two slopes in front. There is nothing strange about this sentence, but it shows that a rising tide lifts all boats in late spring and early summer, and the water is rushing.

In the third sentence, "The warm wind on a sunny day makes the wheat fragrant", the poet's observation turned from the stream to the field, and he wrote about its scenery. For this sentence, Li Bi quoted Han's poem "Warm wind leads wheat, clear rain rolls the flag back", Tang's poem "Eliminate all the guests for a lifetime, warm wind closes the door on a sunny day" and Zhao Shimin's poem "Wheat is wet, Huai Xia Wu Yin Qing". It is likely that when the poet wrote this poem, other people's poems came to his mind. He borrowed and innovated and wrote his true feelings. "Wheat breath" refers to the smell of grass when the sun shines on wheat seedlings. "Sunny warm wind" makes people feel warm, and "angry wheat" reminds people of the momentum of wheat seedlings jointing in the sun.

At the end of the sentence, in "When green grass wins flowers", the poet further looked at what he saw in the distance and his mood at that time. The first three sentences are mainly objective descriptions, and feelings are in the scenery, while this sentence is mainly to express subjective feelings. "Green shade and quiet grass" is the characteristic of spring flowers falling behind the early summer scenery. "Winning flowers" is the poet's unique feeling, which is different from the sadness of "I don't know whether it is green, fat or thin", from the depression of "drowsiness at the beginning of the day" and from the leisure of "everything in Changxiajiang Village is quiet", but from the realization that the natural landscape in early summer is more beautiful and pleasant than when flowers are in full bloom in spring. The poet is emotional and cheerful, and his language is extremely simple.

It is the most common theme in China's classical poems to cherish spring and complain about spring, but why do poets sing "When green grass wins flowers" to praise summer? This poem is not the best, but it obviously has something to think about. Liu Xi's Interpretation of Names and Heaven: "Summer is also a holiday, and everything is long." Summer combines the five elements and becomes a fire. The reason why the poet praises the early summer and captures the images of swift water, "warm sunshine", "wheat breath" and "green grass" is because it is a growing season and a hot season. Isn't it because we see abundant water resources, beautiful weather and good growth of wheat seedlings that we feel that a bumper harvest is in sight, benefiting the country and the people? The poems of poets such as Song Yuanfeng and Hou Yuanfeng can be confirmed from this poem. If this idea is good, it should be said that the poet shows not personal enjoyment, but a broad and enthusiastic mind that cares about the national economy and people's livelihood, and a philosophical examination of the four seasons. Can it be said that the meaning is thin, the poet can't tolerate subtlety, and he only knows how to write poems with clever words?

Wang's poem "Early Summer" says: "The straw shed has a bend and the running water splashes badly. Warm winds on sunny days make wheat fragrant, and green grass wins flowers. " Fan Shihu said, "Taste the kindness and attract the swallow alone, and Shou Wang and Xing Yuan personally recite the last sentence." ([Song] Zhao and Guo's "Entertainment Book Poetry" Volume)
