Lecture 9: An Overview of Poetry Writing (Part Two)

First, an overview of lyrics

With the development and prosperity of Tang poetry, an important new form-Ci appeared in China's poetry. In the early years of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, ci creation began among the people and some literati, and the ci style in the middle Tang Dynasty was basically established. In the late Tang and Five Dynasties, the degree of literati was strengthened, and the art became mature.

Another name for this word.

Ci, the first name of lyrics, is also called Yi Shen, and later it is called long and short sentences and poems. These appellations actually reflect the two sources of words and the two traditions formed along these two sources. The first tradition is that ci is a kind of musical literature, and it is a lyric that matches music. In the early days of words, words were attached to music. A Qing Song Xiangfeng wrote "Yuefu Public Opinion": "Words are written by words, and music is written by sounds." Because of the close relationship between ci and music, it is also called "life", "Yuefu", "Quci" and "Quci". The second tradition is that Ci is the poetic style of long and short sentences, and it is a new metrical poetic style that comes down in one continuous line with Yuefu and Modern Poetry, following the new tradition established with reference to poetic style. Our current lyrics mainly follow the latter tradition.

Predecessors have different understandings of "poetic surplus", some explain that words came after poems, some explain that words evolved from modern five-seven-character poems, some explain that poets wrote words with Yu Xing, and so on.

The tone of the word "two"

Ci is the combination of music and literature. At first, it has qupai, and then it writes lyrics according to the tune. This piece of music is called epigraph.

Each tone has a certain format according to the score on which it is based, but this format is not static at first. Because people write lyrics according to the score, what he wants is reasonable, easy to sing and good to listen, and there is no need to ask every word to be matched. After the Song Dynasty, the music score was gradually lost, and most of the literati did not understand music. Their lyrics are meant to be poems, not songs, so they simply ignore the music score and fill it in word by word according to a tune that their predecessors have already filled in. Therefore, the format is fixed and strict. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, some people summarized the old words and determined the word spectrum, which gave the lyricist a basis.

A combination of three words

There are four kinds of words: monosyllabic, disyllabic, trisyllabic and tetrasyllabic, with disyllabic as the main word. Traditionally, people refer to the upper and lower paragraphs of disyllabic words as upper and lower paragraphs, or upper and lower paragraphs respectively, while the words in the third and fourth paragraphs are called three paragraphs and four paragraphs, not pieces.
