Su Shi commented on Liu Zongyuan’s poems

Su Shi conducted in-depth research on Liu Zongyuan’s poems, and made an overall evaluation and detailed analysis of his status in the history of poetry and his creative style. He said: "Liu Zongyuan's poems were written below Tao Yuanming and above Su Shi's." Simple and ancient, it conveys the taste of indifference, which is beyond the reach of Yu Zi." He also commented on the specific works, saying that the poem "Nanjian Zhongti" is "fresh and vigorous", "there is joy in the sorrow, and there is sorrow in the music, which is a masterpiece of ancient and modern times". He praised the poem "Jiang Xue" for "it is so beautiful and graceful that it is almost a gift from heaven and cannot be matched". Regarding "Climbing the stone alum of Puzhou and looking at the Tan Island at the mouth of the Hengjiang River and the deep and diagonal Xiangling Mountain", he believed that "Zihou's poem is far from spiritual luck." Especially the comments on the poem "The Fisherman" have caused controversy for nearly a thousand years and have become a legend in the literary world. "The fisherman stayed near the western rock at night, and at dawn he drank the clear water and burned the bamboos. When the cigarettes were sold out and no one was seen at sunrise, he heard the sound of green mountains and rivers. Looking back at the skyline and the middle stream, the unintentional clouds on the rock are chasing each other." He said: "The poem is full of strangeness and interest. For the sake of tradition, the poem is unusual and interesting, but the last two sentences are not necessary. "Some people who agree, such as Yan Yu, said: "Dongpo deleted the last two sentences to make Zihou. Even if you come back, you will be convinced." ("Canglang Poetry").
