Appreciation of Zhu Ziqing's beautiful essays in "Singing"

Last night, I was mesmerized by the three Chinese and Western Qingqing songs sung by Chinese and Western Sizhu.

As if on a late spring morning, the soft drizzle falls silently on my face, causing a feeling of moistness and relaxation. The fresh breeze blows my clothes, like a lover's breath blowing my hands. The aluminous stone corridor I built was as if it had been coated with a thin layer of cream after the drizzle; it became smoother and more lovely when I stepped on it.

In the garden at this time. All the flowers are still having their clear dreams. The light rain secretly washed away their dirt, and their sweet and soft luster glowed. Under the washed away glitz, I can see the quiet red, desolate purple, and wry white and green that they hide when there is sunlight. What used to be beautiful in front of my eyes now has a bleak color. ——Are you worried about the end of Fangchun? Is it feeling the sleepiness of youth?

Probably because of the misty rain, the garden lost its lush fragrance. The trickling east wind only brought wisps of hungry floral fragrance; mixed with the smell of damp grass and the taste of earth. In the fields and swamps outside the garden, freshly planted rice seedlings, young wheat, and the fresh steam of shady willow trees come from time to time. Although these are not sweet, they can strongly stimulate my nose and make me feel pleasantly tired.

Behold, it is all in the song: I listen with my ears, eyes, nose, tongue, and body; I also sing with my heart. A healthy paralysis finally took hold of me. So it’s all about the song. From then on, I only sang and listened to the song alone; there was only singing in the world.

Extended information:

"Singing" was written in November 1921. It is Zhu Ziqing's earliest prose. Although it is a short piece of more than 500 words, the characteristics of his lyrical prose are already displayed here.

At that time, Zhu Ziqing was teaching in the middle school department of Wusong China Public School in Shanghai. Soon, there was a turmoil in the Chinese public school, and he was kicked out by the school's conservatives. But living in Shanghai for just a few months was very meaningful to him. He got acquainted with Ye Shengtao, whom he had always admired, at a Chinese public school. The two had a similar spirit and became very close to each other from then on.

There is also a poet and Zhu Ziqing's friend Liu Yanling in the Public School of China. The three of them discussed together and contacted Yu Pingbo in Beijing to prepare for the establishment of the first new poetry magazine "Shi" in the history of modern Chinese literature (founded in January 1922).

At that time, Zhu Ziqing was a 23-year-old young man who had just entered society. On the one hand, he really felt the heavy pressure from the reactionaries on their spirit; on the other hand, because he met close friends in the New Literature Movement, his heart was filled with youthful enthusiasm.
