Yu Xiqu’s Literature and Art

Although Yu Xiqu was born as a farmer and has a low level of education, he has loved ancient and modern novels such as "Water Margin" and "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" since he was a child, and often talks about the past and the present with his fellow villagers. He loves literature and art, is rich in artistic talent, and is good at combining real life and using cultural and artistic forms to carry out publicity and education activities. As early as during the democratic revolution, he used literature and art as a weapon to expose the enemy and educate the people. He created many folk songs such as "Aoyu Ci" and "Charcoal Selling Song", which were widely circulated among the people. They also organized entertainment activities such as lantern riddle guessing, "colorful scenes in front of gods", and swimming fish dances to achieve the purpose of uniting the people and attacking the enemy. After liberation, he attached great importance to local cultural construction, cared for and supported literary and artistic talents, and laid a solid foundation for Chenghai's cultural undertakings. He himself practiced it personally and created a number of poems and short songs such as "Eminem Thinks About His Ex-Love at Midnight" and "Water Control Song", which were very popular and praised by the masses. The "Commissioner Opera" he created was closer to life and the masses. , became a splendid literary and artistic landscape at that time.

In 1960, when our country was encountering economic difficulties, Yu Xiqu led the prefectural committee working group to Guanshan to help the people tide over the famine. In order to inspire fighting spirit, strengthen confidence, and carry out socialist education, Yu Xiqu personally created the Teochew opera "Long Tongue Han" and performed it in various places in Chenghai. It was well received by the audience and achieved obvious educational effects. Then, he created "Hanjiang Water" and "Coastal Trend", both of which were huge successes. "Binhai Trend" received wide acclaim after its performance in Guangzhou. "Yangcheng Evening News" and "Nanfang Daily" successively published a number of review articles. The script was published by the Guangdong People's Publishing House, and the Ministry of Culture distributed it to various operas across the country. More than 10 theater troupes, including Teochew opera, Han opera, mountain opera, Hua opera, Yue opera, etc., adapted and performed it, which has a wide influence. He has successively created eight large-scale modern Teochew opera scripts, seven of which have been put on stage by professional troupes. His drama works are based on rural life, with a strong flavor of life and local color, vivid artistic language, rich ideological content and strong characteristics of the times. They are deeply instructive to people and play a good role. They are loved by the masses. Known as the "Commissioner's Play". What is even more commendable is that these scripts were not written on the job, but were written by him in his spare time after his busy work.

In order to summarize and introduce the achievements and experiences of agricultural production and popularize agricultural science knowledge, Yu Xiqu created a large number of agricultural science poems, some of which were accompanied by paintings, and were published in "Nanfang Daily", "Works", "Shantou Daily" and other newspapers. In 1962, a unique and large-scale "Field Literature and Art" exhibition was organized and held. The exhibition skillfully combines science and literature, using poetry, calligraphy, painting, writing, and various artistic techniques such as drawn yarn, inlaid porcelain, sarong, lanterns, paper-cutting, incense molding, bonsai, etc., which not only vividly highlights The exhibition effect also promoted excellent traditional culture. Tens of thousands of people visited the exhibition. The visitors came not only from all over Guangdong, but also from Fujian and other places who specially organized agricultural, publicity and cultural departments to visit. It has the reputation of "agriculture and literature, with flowers blooming on both sides".

Yu Xiqu is infinitely loyal to the cause of the party and serves the people wholeheartedly. He has been fully affirmed by party organizations at the central, provincial and regional levels. In the spring of 1963, the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China established Comrade Yu Xiqu as a model party member and issued a notice to party organizations across the province, calling on party members and cadres across the province to learn from Comrade Yu Xiqu. "Nanfang Daily" also reported on the front page on March 31 of the same year. "Red Flag" magazine and "Shantou Daily" also published articles about Yu Xiqu's exemplary deeds. In 1963, Yu Xiqu was elected as a representative of the Third People's Congress of Guangdong Province; in 1964, he was elected as a representative of the Third National People's Congress.
