Huang Tingjian is talented not only in poetry but also in calligraphy. His running script was greatly influenced by Su Shi, and it was even more natural and unrestrained. In his Book Theory, he also saw the appreciation and admiration for Dongpo's calligraphy. In cursive script, Huang Tingjian was a student of Zhou Yue, who not only studied with famous artists, but also benefited from some insights in life. Only in Xi Zhi, Rainbow, when Huang Tingjian was traveling and enjoying the landscape, he suddenly realized the world between the lines, so his calligraphy began to have a brand-new connotation.
3. Back to his poems, why are there not so many well-known poems highly respected? In fact, people who have seen some appreciation of Huang Tingjian's poems should know. Although Huang Tingjian's poems are wonderful, they are only wonderful in a difficult situation. Unlike Li Shangyin's Untitled, Li Shangyin's Untitled has no background and does not know how to appreciate it. There are three difficulties in Huang Tingjian's poems: difficult to understand, difficult to appreciate and difficult to teach. This is also a common feature of Song poetry.
4. It's hard to understand. In Huang Tingjian's poems, every sentence can reflect his profound literary connotation, or have profound meaning or ordinary quotations. It is difficult to explain with annotations. After all the notes were completed, I found it a bit confusing to combine the whole poem.
5. It is difficult to appreciate and teach. Huang Tingjian's poems are very interesting, that is, they contain some life philosophies and truths, which are more difficult to understand than ordinary feelings. Moreover, Huang Tingjian's poems are full of Zen meaning, which is something that can only be understood but cannot be expressed. When you say it, you lose your Zen meaning.
6. Huang Tingjian's poems are excellent, but for these reasons, they are far from our lives. Only some people who specialize in or love ancient poetry can understand and interpret the beauty of poetry. However, for the cultural history of China, this is definitely a valuable asset.
