What are the artistic features of Li Shangyin's poems?
Among the poets in the late Tang Dynasty, Li Shangyin's poems developed the artistic skills of classical poetry and had high artistic achievements. Shi Li absorbed the strengths of his predecessors extensively. His five-character ancient poem "Hundred Rhymes in the Western Suburb" learns from Du Fu, "Ballads on the Sea" learns from Li He, and his seven-character ancient poem "Hanbei" learns from Han Yu. His highest achievement is modern poetry, especially the seven laws. In this respect, he inherited the characteristics of Du Fu's Seven Laws, such as being cautious, solitary and depressed, and combined the rich colors of Qi Liang's poems with the fantastic symbolism of Li He's poems, forming a unique style of deep affection and aesthetics. In the use of allusions, he mastered the skills of using allusions in Du Fu's mouth, and with the help of appropriate historical analogy, he made clear the meaning that is inconvenient to express and made the content that is easy to write plain refreshing. In love poems, he is also good at using myths to tell anecdotes, touch the artistic atmosphere and win the imagination of Li He's poems. These superb skills are also well represented in his seven wonders. Of course, there are many obscure places in his allusions. Yuan Haowen said in The Theory of Poetry: "Poets always love Quincy and hate that no one writes about Jian Zheng", which is well founded.
