How to evaluate The Lord of the Rings and its prequel The Hobbit?
For modern people, The Lord of the Rings is more meaningful than A Dream of Red Mansions. Including human's reflection on industrial civilization and post-modern people's spiritual dilemma after the two world wars, it is prominently manifested as a contradictory anti-modernity, which is embodied in post-war existentialism, nihilism, mysticism, anarchism and social waves under various systems. In the 1960s and 1970s, hippies even replaced the Bible with The Lord of the Rings, which showed some non-Christian communication.
