Introduction to childhood:
Childhood is Gorky's first autobiographical work. The story begins with the day when I was a child. I recovered from a serious illness, but my father who took care of me died of illness. "I" followed my mother to my grandmother's house, and since then I have started a humiliating life under the fence. Grandfather is the president of the local dyehouse association. When my mother took me back, two uncles were fighting for property. My uncle's cruelty and selfishness, my grandfather's meanness and greed, let me witness the cruelty and ugliness of the world, and my young mind was deeply shocked. Only my amiable grandmother is the only patron saint of my miserable childhood, caring for me and telling me beautiful fairy tales. "I" draw the nourishment of life from it and quietly bury the seeds of truth, goodness and beauty in my inner world. [ 1]
This book vividly shows the social features and folk customs of Russia in the second half of the19th century with fresh, natural and unpretentious language through the innocent eyes of the little hero Alexei.
Lenin said: "There is no doubt that Gorky is a magnificent artistic genius. He has made and will continue to make many contributions to proletarians all over the world. "
