Brown sugar has been circulated in ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine. The newly revised Materia Medica in the Tang Dynasty has the following statement: "... it is very good for people to think of sugar"; In the Compendium of Materia Medica written by Li Shizhen in Ming Dynasty, brown sugar can "harmonize spleen and slow liver", "replenish blood and promote blood circulation, dredge blood stasis and discharge lochia".
