The beginning and classification of homophonic crossword puzzles by Wuhan Cai Dajin's enigma friend

Homophonic crossword puzzles refer to a kind of crossword puzzles in which one or two Chinese characters are homophonic (or homophonic, syncopated), or other non-Chinese materials are taken to achieve homophonic purpose. Some people call it "phonetic word puzzle" or "phonetic word puzzle". The reason why we call it "homophonic crossword puzzle" is to follow the tradition of "six books and homophonic sounds", and to reveal the laws and characteristics of the whole "homophonic crossword puzzle" through this definition. The above-mentioned expressions of "raising the sound" and "changing the sound" are only technical terms when commenting on a single puzzle. If they are used for theoretical generalization of "homophonic crossword puzzles", they still have the defect of not covering a wide range. Therefore, before we have a scientific name, we will call it "homophonic crossword puzzle" for the time being.

It is a long-standing and excellent tradition in our country to make riddles by using the meanings of the Chinese characters "Six Books" (that is, pictograph, pointing to things, knowing, harmonic sound, transliteration and borrowing). This tradition is embodied in Xie Huixin's Commentary on Distinguishing Categories of Lights and Tigers. At the beginning of the book, he wrote a big book "The Principles of Six Books". Put all the "methods" in the riddle except the riddle. "Style" belongs to "Six Books". Is Xie's induction scientific and reasonable? I don't know. Why did he make such an induction? It is also unclear. We really can't find a specific answer from his book. Only after reading Zhang Qinan's "Spring Lantern Talk in the Garden" did I know that Zhang's "Mystery Saint" had a similar exposition. Zhang said in "Spring Lantern Talk": "The mystery has its own style. The body has the difference of knowing, pictographic, harmonic sound, increasing loss, clutch and excuse. " Then Zhang listed the characteristics of this kind of riddles in detail. From this point of view, Xie Gong is just copying the "theory" of "mystery saint". There are many places in the Commentary to copy the Spring Lantern Talk, so let's discuss it later.

The "Six Books Principle" has influenced the modern mystery for more than 7 years since Xie Huixin. It has almost become a conventional and generally accepted theoretical framework in the mystery world. It is still unrealistic and difficult to break this "framework" and rebuild a new theory of riddles. The "harmony", "syncopation" and "rhyme" in Xie Gong's book belong to the category of "harmony" today. For example, in the category of "harmonic sound", the word "rhyme" is what we now call "homophonic crossword puzzle". This riddle became a riddle with the homonym of "marriage, fate" and "sound, member", which became a classic of homophonic deduction in modern riddle circles. This riddle appeared in the lantern riddle classics in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, and the author was anonymous. The riddle was originally like this: "it's not a marriage." It is a sentence pattern that slightly transforms the folk saying "not enemies don't get together" since the Ming and Qing Dynasties (see 29 chapters of A Dream of Red Mansions). "Enemies" is the metaphor of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu in A Dream of Red Mansions. The mystery of "marriage" is understandable. However, Xie Huixin changed the word "not" to "each other". Although the mystery is close, it is far from the original meaning of "saying".

"homophonic crossword puzzle" is a derivative and cultivation of folk homophonic puzzles. If folk homophonic riddles are compared to hotbeds of culture bacteria, then "homophonic riddles" are raspberries and mushrooms that grow on this hotbed. China has a very long history of "harmony" riddles. There are many examples of "homophonic" puns in Yuefu poems dating back to the Southern and Northern Dynasties. Such as "ring" harmonizes "return", "silk" harmonizes "thinking", "hibiscus" harmonizes "husband's capacity" and "lotus seed" harmonizes "Reiko" and so on. It developed into Shen Jiong's poem "Living in Leisure" imitating the style of "County" in Chen Dynasty: "How spacious the house is, the people with lofty ideals hide Artemisia", and the "house" is demolished with the homonym of "ambition". Throughout the Song Dynasty, the information on riddles should be said to be very rich. Unfortunately, the separation is serious. At present, there are not many pieces of Qi Dong Ye Yu except Ji Guang. The real "homophonic" riddle is hard to find. We can only get a glimpse of it from the later book "Poetry Zen" by Li Kaixian in Ming Dynasty. For example, "buddhist nun is not worth half a penny" in "Poetry Zen" shoots "Time flies", and the homonym "Time Temple is cheap" is linked. The "time" here is another explanation, and the "temple base" is a "homonym". Another example is "Tianshi does not need a boat to cross the river". As the saying goes, "he has his own statutes", in which "degree" is homophonic for "crossing". This is equivalent to today's "foundation lattice". The above-mentioned folk riddles with "homophonic" riddles laid a solid foundation for the selection of "homophonic" riddles by literati in the Qing Dynasty. Without the efforts of several generations in Song and Ming Dynasties, the "harmonious sound" lantern riddle from Qing Dynasty to modern times could not be developed. The harmonious sound patterns in the riddle, such as "pear flower", "flying white", "jade belt" and "bottom", are the signs that the "harmonious sound" riddle is gradually maturing and fixed. The reason why Zhang Qinan called "sorrowful inquiry about husband's illness" and "disheveled cup and dish" (harmonic "sad dish and lang's illness") "secular biography" (see the first volume of Spring Lantern Talk) is probably because the "homophonic" riddle originally came from the people. In fact, this mystery is not "secular", but the authentic creation of Jiangnan literati during Jiaqing period of Qing Dynasty. It appeared earlier in Ai Susheng's Zhuxi Chunshe Banknotes. The riddle was originally "sad to ask about my husband's illness." Target "Chaoyang Style" (namely "Zhaoyang Style"), shoot a sentence of "ancient prose". It is a familiar idiom that "the cup and the dish are in a mess" was published in Historical Records and Biographies of Funny Stories, and then appeared repeatedly in novels such as Three Dreams and Qiludeng.

"It's not a marriage, but also a marriage" is produced under the historical background that the "harmonious sound" lantern riddle has matured. This mystery is not so much the creation of one person as the crystallization of collective wisdom. It didn't cause mystery at first.
