Huang Daozhou's calligraphy is dominated by ancient books of Zhong You and its system, such as Su Dongpo, Lu You, Zhu and Yang Weizhen, and traced back to seal script and official script. Therefore, his books are characterized by simplicity and interesting writing in small letters, such as Epitaph of Zhang Pu, which is mainly manifested in the structure and combines the simple styles of Zhong You and Su Dongpo. Compared with Wang Chong, Wang is smart and graceful, and Huang is clumsy and vigorous, which are two diametrically opposite realms. His small seal script is Gao Shanzhai Poetry Book, which is full of interest. Sometimes, the two words in this book are connected in a group, and most of them are independent, but the strokes and gestures echo each other. Sometimes it is a real book, sometimes it is a running script, and even a cursive script is included, which implies a lot of ingenuity in the overall clumsy image. However, the simple place and smooth cursive form have unexpected ingenious, strange and dynamic changes, as well as wide spacing, forming rich connotations, tall and straight and clumsy. Its banners "Poem of Happy Rain" and "Seven Wonders Axis" (Figure 144) are representative. Its graphics are on the upper right, and the center of gravity of the characters is mostly low, and the shape is flat, which fully shows the ugly shape of the clock system, line and truth. Huang Daozhou's creativity is reflected in his smooth and unrestrained brushwork, combining the astringency and muddy strength of lines to create a new beauty of the book. In this type, Yang Weizhen can be described as simple and honest, while Huang Daozhou succeeded in combining rough and clumsy, unrestrained and free and easy, thus making his calligraphy shine strangely in the history of style.
