Xi'an Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. Its predecessor was Nanyang Public School founded in Shanghai in 1896. It was renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. In 1956, the State Council decided that Jiaotong University would be moved to Xi'an. In 1959, It was named Xi'an Jiaotong University and was listed as a national key university. Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the first batch of key universities to enter the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". In 1999, it was identified by the country as a school with the goal of building a world-renowned high-level university. In April 2000, the State Council decided to merge Xi'an Medical University, which had been under the Ministry of Health for more than 60 years, and Shaanxi University of Finance and Economics, which had been under the People's Bank of China for more than 40 years, into Xi'an Jiaotong University.
The School of Art of Xi'an Jiaotong University was established in 2000. It began to recruit master's degree students in art in 2001 and undergraduate students in art design in 2002. Master's degree students are recruited in six directions every year. The art department currently has 20 full-time teachers and 3 professors, including Professor Zhong Mingshan, a nationally renowned calligrapher and consultant to the Chinese Calligraphers Association, and the other two are oil painter Liu Aimin and sculptor Jia Zhuofei, who are somewhat influential in the national art circle. There are 7 associate professors. The Department of Art currently has three undergraduate programs: art design, calligraphy, and sculpture, and master's degree programs in sculpture, oil painting, calligraphy theory, graphic design, and environmental art design.
