Writing brushes are mainly divided into:
1. Hard brushes
The bristles of hard brushes are more elastic, and the common ones are rabbit hairs, wolf hairs, and deer hairs. , rat whiskers, badger hairs, mountain horse hairs, boar bristles, etc. Rabbit hair brushes have a long history. The Warring States brushes unearthed in Changsha were made of rabbit hairs. It is made by splitting the pen stem into several pieces, inserting the pen tip, and then tightly tying it with silk thread. Rabbit hair is divided into two types: purple hair and white hair.
2. Soft pens
Soft pens have less elasticity and are softer. It is generally made of soft wool such as sheep hair, chicken hair, and fetus hair. The Yanghao pen is made of goat hair, and its performance is softer than the Zihao pen. Because the sheep hair is thinner and longer, it is suitable for writing large regular script and large characters.
3. Jianhao pen
"Jianhao", as the name suggests, means both. That is to say, with hard hair as the core and soft hair surrounding it, the writing style is between hard hair and soft hair. Generally, purple hair and sheep hair are made in different proportions. For example, "three purples and seven sheep", "seven purples and three sheeps", and "five purples and five sheeps" etc.

Maintenance of brushes:
(1) To use a new pen, you must first open it. Soak the purchased pen in warm water, and do not soak it in water for too long until the tip of the pen is fully opened. Do not let the glue at the base of the pen melt, otherwise it will become a "hair-shedding pen" and the hair will fall off easily.
(2) Refining the pen is a necessary task before writing. You cannot write as soon as the pen is stained with ink. The method is to soak the pen with clean water first, and then lift it up. Do not soak it for a long time to prevent the glue at the base of the pen from melting. Then hang the pen upside down until the tip of the pen regains its flexibility, which may take dozens of minutes.
(3) You can start writing only after that. This "inking" also requires a lot of knowledge. In order to achieve uniformity and allow the ink to penetrate into the pen, the clean water must be absorbed first, and the pen can be gently dragged on the absorbent paper until it is dry.
(4) The pen needs to be washed immediately after writing. The ink has colloid. If it is not washed away, the pen will be firmly bonded with the ink and glue after it dries. It will not be easy to dissolve when it is reused, and the pen will be easily broken.
(5) After washing, first absorb the remaining water on the pen and straighten it out [same as before inserting ink]. Then hang the pen on the pen holder to allow the remaining water to continue dripping until it dries. Please pay attention to drying in a cool place to preserve the original shape and characteristics of the pen. Do not expose it to sunlight.
