Liu Gongchuo (763-832), with a wide character and a small character, was born in Jingzhao Huayuan (now Liujiayuan, Cousang Township, Yaozhou District, Tongchuan City, Shaanxi Province). A famous official and calligrapher of the Tang Dynasty, he was the brother of Liu Gongquan.
Liu Gongchuo was a dignified and rigorous man and liked to associate with heroes. Smart, eager to learn, and quite talented. He is the governor of Leiguan Prefecture, serves as the censor, is a doctor in the official department, and is the censor. During the reign of Emperor Xianzong, he was an observer of history for Eyue, made meritorious deeds against Wu Yuanji, and paid homage to Jing Zhaoyin. Later, he moved to Hedong Jiedushi, Shangshu of the Ministry of Hubu, Shangshu of the Ministry of War and other positions.
In the sixth year of Yamato (832), Liu Gongchuo passed away at the age of sixty-eight. He was given the posthumous title "Yuan" as the crown prince's Taibao.
Liu Gongchuo's calligraphy is solemn, vigorous, simple and natural. Chengdu's "The Monument of the Shrine of Prime Minister Zhuge Wuhou of Shu" was written when Liu Gongchuo was appointed Shaoyin of Chengdu. Because it was written by Prime Minister Pei Du and engraved by the famous craftsman Lu Jian , so it has the reputation of "three unique monuments".
Liu Gongchuo liked to collect books. He had a library in his family called "Xitang" with more than 10,000 volumes. Moreover, every book in the collection must have three copies: the upper one is a copy with gorgeous paper and ink, which is kept in the treasury and is stored in the treasury; the second one is a copy that is commonly used for reading; and the lower one is a copy for children and young children to study. He was good at literature, and his articles were not superficial. He had a collection of essays, but they have been lost. His son Liu Zhongying also loved collecting books and inherited and developed the Liu family's book collection.
