When he was a high school student in Peking (Beijing), Mr. Yan Shaoxiang, then an art teacher, discovered his painting talent and taught him according to his aptitude. After graduating from middle school, he studied in a normal school for two years and was admitted to the National Peking Art College (now the Central Academy of Fine Arts) in 1939. In the early days of school, he studied oil painting, sketching and color with Mr. Guo Baichuan. After listening to the Chinese painting class taught by Mr. Qi Baishi, I developed a strong interest in Chinese painting. In the second year, he changed to study traditional Chinese painting and was taught by Pu Xinxuan and other teachers. At the same time, he also learned fine brushwork and freehand brushwork from Mr. Zhao Mengzhu, Yu Fei'an, Wang Shensheng, etc. In theory, he also learned from Mr. Zhang Daqian and Huang Binhong.
In 1940, he became a member of the "Chinese Painting Research Association" chaired by Mr. Zhou Yang'an. Later, he was introduced by the calligrapher Mr. Luo Fukan and studied painting under Wang Xuetao for more than ten years. When he was twenty-four or five years old, he became a well-known young painter in Beijing. He held many art exhibitions in Beijing and his works have won many awards. Because of his outstanding talent, under the auspices of Wang Xuetao, Li Zanzhou became Yan Bolong's son-in-law, and was also taught by Mr. Yan Bolong face-to-face!
