Regular script is a common handwritten font style in China's calligraphy, and it is a modern popular orthography of Chinese characters. This style is gradually evolved from official script, which is more simplified, horizontal and vertical, and can be divided into big letters, middle letters and small letters. Ou Yangxun, Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan and Zhao Mengfu are four masters of regular script.

Regular script, also known as regular script, original script and official script, evolved from official script founded by Cheng Miao, and became more simple and complicated. Ci Hai is interpreted as "square and straight, which can be used as a model." Hence the name regular script. It began at the end of the Han dynasty and has been popular until modern times.

evolutionary process

Regular script is the most popular script in China feudal society from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Jin and Tang Dynasties. Before the emergence of regular script, there were three types of calligraphy in China: Dazhuan, Xiaozhuan and Lishu. Generally speaking, the ancient characters before Xiao Zhuan are collectively referred to as Da Zhuan, including Oracle Bone Inscriptions, bronze inscriptions and six languages except Qin in the Warring States Period.

By the end of the Tang Dynasty, regular script had reached its peak and its style was too regular, so it gradually declined. However, "the Tang book emphasizes the law, and the Song book emphasizes the meaning". If the Han and Wei Dynasties were the initial stage of regular script and the Tang Dynasty was the mature stage of regular script, then the Song and Yuan Dynasties were the extension stage of regular script. In the Tang Dynasty, regular script had strict laws and strict structure. During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, calligraphers began to pursue the aesthetic feeling of their works, some handsome and natural, some elegant and graceful.
