Calligraphy Department of China Academy of Fine Arts is the only independent calligraphy department in domestic universities. Its predecessor was 1963, which founded the calligraphy and seal cutting specialty of Chinese painting department, and the calligraphy department was formally established in 200 1. The Department adheres to the road of studying tradition, carrying forward tradition and the policy of "consolidating the foundation, learning from the past and opening up the present", emphasizes the foundation of Chinese studies, attaches importance to cultural accomplishment, and emphasizes the combination of theory and practice, foundation and individuality, and integration and specialization, thus forming a higher calligraphy education and teaching system with college characteristics. The Department of Calligraphy aims at cultivating professionals with high creative practice and academic research ability of calligraphy and seal cutting, and now has three professional directions: calligraphy and seal cutting creation, calligraphy theory study and calligraphy education.

The Central Academy of Fine Arts has 9 undergraduate majors (painting, traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, sculpture, art design, fine arts, architecture, photography and animation), 1 master of arts major (covering 8 two disciplines), 1 master of architecture major (architectural design and its theory) and 1 master of arts major (MFF). In 2003, the establishment of art postdoctoral mobile station was approved.
