At the age of thirty-one, Konghai monk set out to study in China, arrived in Chang 'an in the twentieth year of Zhenyuan in Tang Dezong (804), and returned to Japan three years later. He brought many Buddhist scriptures, calligraphy and poems from China, and introduced tantric Buddhism to Japan from the Tang Dynasty. He compiled the names of Indian officials in Vientiane, the first Chinese character dictionary in Japan.
