The form of bamboo slips

Bamboo slips have different shapes, and there are many names recorded in the literature. There are three important types: bamboo slips, bamboo slips and bamboo slips.

simple

It is made of bamboo or wood, usually cut into long strips, and the writing side is polished; Bamboo is also dried on the fire. This process is called "history recording" or "stopping", which aims to facilitate inking and prevent smoking. Generally speaking, the width of bamboo slips is 0.5 ~ 1 cm, the thickness is several millimeters, and the length depends on needs. There were 3 feet, 2.4 feet, 1.2 feet, 0.8 feet (both China feet) and so on in the Han Dynasty. There seems to be customization in the Han dynasty: the official Confucian classics and decrees are long and short, and hundreds of works are long and short. Jane used in different times has different sizes. Write a line on each letter. There are also a few bamboo slips about twice as wide and written in two lines, which are called "two lines" in diameter. Many bamboo slips are woven together with hemp rope or silk rope and are called "books". Generally, there are 2 ~ 5 tracks, and some are 1 track, which usually depends on the length of slips. Most of them are compiled before writing. This simplified book form (or simplified book system) was perfected in the Han Dynasty. For example, after editing, except for a few, most of them will leave a little blank at the top and bottom, just like the top and bottom of paper documents. The first two pieces of a simplified book are generally blank, which is called the first or redundant book. This is the origin of the title page of the book later. Some sections of the book have a small problem before each paragraph, an end at the end and the total number of words in this article, and some are marked with "page number" at the end or back of each section of the book. There are also simplified books that use symbols such as flat frames, dots, circles and triangles to indicate the positions of chapters and sentences. The storage method of simplified books is to take the last simplified book as the axis and roll up the side with words. In order to know the contents of the volume without opening it, there are titles and articles on the back of the first Jane from right to left. Some bamboo slips found in Qin dynasty are centered on the first bamboo slip, so the title is on the back of the last bamboo slip.

Most of them are made of wood, which is different from Jane in that it is widened several times. Some are about 6 cm wide, while others are more than 15 cm, which is rectangular, so it is also called "square" or "version". Manuscripts are mostly used to write contracts, medical prescriptions, calendars, passes (passes), letters, etc. Letters are often abbreviated as 1 ruler (China ruler), so people often refer to letters as "ruler simplification". The imperial edict was written with a ruler (Chinese ruler 1. 1 ruler). Bamboo slips are also used to draw maps, which is why later generations called the territory of a country "territory". It is also used to write the title of a book, which may be the source of the content of the latter book. More often, the inscription is used as the name (list) for writing funerary objects, which is called "Fangfang" (if written in simplified Chinese characters, it is called "Xie Ce").

Cut wood into polygons with seven or eight faces at most. Generally, they are relatively long, some are more than 80 centimeters long and contain more characters. It is often used to copy books such as Collection of Explanations and Cang Xie (see dictionary), and it can also be used to take notes, draft or practice calligraphy.
