A brief introduction to life
Zhang Sengyou was a famous painter in the Southern Dynasties, who was famous for painting Buddha statues. The portraits in his paintings are accurate and vivid, and calligraphy is integrated into the paintings, making the paintings more expressive. His artistic techniques are concise and varied, and he is known as "the pen is just a little bit, like it should be".
Zhang Sengyou's painting art has a great influence on later generations, and he is also called "the fourth ancestor of painters" with Gu Kaizhi, Lu Tanwei and Wu Daozi. Yan and Wu Daozi, painters in the Tang Dynasty, both studied under him. He studied hard on the Buddha figures and formed his own style, which is called "Zhang's family style".
