What are Li Shutong’s achievements?

Li Shutong, (1880~1942) one of the founders of early Chinese drama, educator and calligrapher. He is originally from Pinghu, Zhejiang, and lives in Tianjin. After becoming a monk, he was named Hongyi. In 1905, he traveled to Japan to study painting and music, and founded the Chunliu Society with Zeng Xiaogu and others. He returned to China in 1910 and engaged in literary and artistic activities. He converted to Buddhism in 1918 and was ordained at Hupao Temple in Hangzhou. He has many achievements in calligraphy, painting, poetry, seal cutting, music, and drama, and has performed in Peking Opera. In particular, the Chunliu Society drama performances he led were of epoch-making significance in the history of Chinese drama. His performance also received high praise. After becoming a monk, he studied Vinaya and became a representative figure of the contemporary Buddhist Vinaya sect.
