How to appreciate calligraphy?

Calligraphy is a black-and-white art and an art form expressed through lines.

Calligraphy is writing first, and it is well written in one stroke. Block letters, official scripts and seal scripts are all written in one stroke. However, the writing of the same word is different, for example, the preface to the Lanting written by the book sage Wang Xizhi, and dozens of words are written in different ways. This is the difference between art and printing. Printing is definitely a good word, but it's not as good as calligraphy.

There is also a cursive script, which looks casual, but each stroke is also very particular, and there must be a source. Every word in calligraphy is written in a seemingly random way.

In their later years, many old calligraphers have a deeper understanding of calligraphy, reached a handy level, and achieved the goal of being out of shape and protecting their spirits. This kind of calligraphy needs calligraphy aesthetics, which is beyond the understanding of ordinary people. For example, the works of master Hongyi:

Hongyi, formerly known as Li Shutong, is a master of modern Buddhism, calligraphy and seal cutting in China.
