The Writing Background of Heart
The novel Heart, published in April of the third year of Taisho (19 14), is one of the late representative works of Natsume Sozaki, a Japanese modern literature master and critical realism writer. He suffered from gastric ulcer for a long time. During the convalescence of Xiushan Temple in Izu Peninsula in Meiji 43 (19 10), his condition took a turn for the worse again, with stomach cramps, massive vomiting of blood, and he fell into an unconscious "30-minute death" state.
After this near-death experience, he changed the original creative style of harmonious games, explored life from the front, paid attention to the psychological description and analysis of characters, and directly turned to analyze the hateful, sad and deplorable lonely inner world of egoists in Meiji era.
