Is it true that the name of the Beijing time-honored Liubiju was inscribed by Yan Song, the minister of the Ming Dynasty?

In the Ming Dynasty, there was an old shop in Beijing called Liuxinju, because it was opened by six brothers surnamed Zhao, which meant "six people in one". Minister Yan Song likes to eat six-hearted pickles. Every season, new pickles, Yan Song will offer an altar to Emperor Jiajing. After eating pickles, Emperor Jiajing was very satisfied. He added a word "Xin" to "Liu Xin Ju" and changed it to "Liu Bi Ju", and Yan Song wrote the name of the store himself.

Yan Song inscribed the store name for Liubiju, which was widely circulated among the people. According to the official statement of Liu Biju Museum, Yan Song wrote a plaque in the name of Liu Biju, without mentioning that Emperor Jiajing changed his name to Liu Biju. Ming Dynasty 1566 is a TV series adapted from historical novels, so it is understandable to add some works to make it more legendary and enjoyable.

So aside from the plot that Emperor Jiajing renamed Liubiju, did Yan Song write a name for Liubiju?

According to the introduction of the Liu Museum, Liu was founded in the ninth year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1530) and has a history of 490 years this year. It is a veritable century-old brand. Liu was founded by three brothers, Zhao Cunren, Zhao Cunyi and Zhao in Xi Du Village, Linfen, Shanxi. Specializing in the first six kinds of "rice, oil, salt, sauce and vinegar tea" and not selling tea, it is called Liu.

Liubiju has another meaning. At first, Liubiju had a wine-making business. When making wine, it is required that "the millet should be neat, the tiller should be solid, Zhan should be clean, the pottery should be good, the temperature should be good, and the water should be fragrant". It means that the brewing materials must be complete, the brewing koji must be true, the production process of brewing must be clean, the temperature must be properly controlled, the vessels for holding wine must be excellent, and the spring water for brewing must be pure and fragrant.

Yan Song was born in the 16th year of Chenghua in Ming Xianzong (1480). After the downfall of Liu Jin and his gang, Yan Song gained the trust of Emperor Jiajing, and his official position became bigger and bigger, and he was in power in the court for a period of time. From the time line, it is the time when Yan Song is in full swing after Liubiju started its business. It's a shrewd business for the boss of Liubiju to ask Yan Song for an inscription.

How is Yan Song's calligraphy?

Yan Song is a serious scholar, ranking second in class. He was only 25 years old when he was admitted to Jinshi. This means that Yan Song's calligraphy level is not bad. According to Yan Song's own introduction, when he was recovering from illness in Qian Shan, he had nothing to do and practiced hard, even if it was cold and hot. Yan Song is good at writing tables, inscriptions, seals, scrolls and other fonts. It is easy for him to write a list of "six habitats" and so on.

To sum up, no matter from the point of time or the level of calligraphy, it is possible for Yan Song to inscribe the name of Liubiju. However, according to Mr. Deng Tuo's research, Yan Song didn't write the store name for Liubiju.

Deng Tuo is a famous journalist, poet, essayist and historian. At that time, after graduating from Henan University, Deng Tuo published the monograph "History of Disaster Relief in China". Deng Tuo has long heard of the saying that "Yan Song wrote an inscription for Liu" and expressed doubts about it. Even if people took out a plaque with the words "six habitats", they did not dispel his doubts. Because this plaque has neither Yan Song's signature nor seal as evidence.

Later, Deng Tuo got in touch with Mr. He Yongchang, an old friend of Liu, and found a batch of Liu's information through him, including 9 deeds of the old house, 1 book, 1 book, 1 book and so on. After reading these materials in detail, Deng Tuo found that they first appeared in the 19th year of Kangxi in Qing Dynasty. The 19th year of Kangxi was 1680. This means that Liu was probably founded in the early Qing Dynasty, not in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty.

If Liu Biju was really founded in the early Qing Dynasty, then Yan Song would have no chance to write the name of Liu Biju.

Another historian, Mr. Wang Huien, published an article "Introduction to Six Habitats" in the Journal of the Chinese Museum of History in February, 2000, pointing out that it is correct to say that Six Habitats was founded in the ninth year of Jiajing in Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1530). As the owner of Liubiju for the longest time once wrote, Liubiju was "a firm named Guo in the west of Liangdian Street outside Qianmen in the ninth year of Ming Jiajing, and Liubiju", "This sum of money was paid by Ming Jiajing in September at 3,200 yuan" ... The contract was lost due to the destruction of the soldiers of the Boxer Rebellion ".

However, the founder of Liu is not six brothers surnamed Zhao, but a boss surnamed Guo. Later, Liu changed hands to Guo Guifang and Zhao Bi. After the second year of Qing Dynasty (1822), Liu Biju was once again mainly in charge of Zhao. From this point of view, the so-called "Liu founded by six brothers Zhao" is a myth, and even "Liu founded by Zhao Cunren, Zhao Cunyi and Zhao Brothers" has a high probability that it does not exist.
