Introduction to Cao Changyuan

Cao Changyuan initially learned traditional calligraphy from Mr. Jiang Weisong. In 1989, under the guidance of Mr. Jiang and Mr. Ouyang Zhongshi and Ye Xiuchuan, he edited "Principles of Chinese Calligraphy" and won the Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award from the Shandong Provincial Education Commission. After 1990, he turned to the teaching and research of standardizing the practical writing of Chinese characters. In 1991, he co-edited "Chinese Hard-tipped Calligraphy" with Mr. Shen Honggen. In 1994, he edited the "Hard Pen Calligraphy Tutorial for Teachers" for the Higher Education Press, which for the first time proposed "Structure first, pen usage second; Horizontal writing first, vertical writing second; Standards first, style second; Practicality first." The practical writing training concept of "art comes second" was hailed as a "pioneering work" by Mr. Jiang Dongshu, chairman of the Chinese Hard Pen Calligraphers Association. This book has been used as a writing training textbook by many colleges and universities across the country for more than ten years. In 2006, commissioned by Higher Education Press, he compiled "Standardizing Chinese Character Writing Methods and Training" and presided over the production of the CD-ROM and this online resource attached to the book, further breaking through the traditional calligraphy system centered on "stroke writing training". Especially for the conversion from regular script to horizontal writing in regular script, targeted training methods were designed and a more practical writing training program was proposed.
