Huang Tingjian has a strong sense of innovation. He was deeply influenced by Su Shi in calligraphy, but he always kept a certain distance from Su Shi. His views on "self-reliance" are very clear.
Su Shi's writing is close to the nib, with his arm on his wrist and his pen on his back, which leads to a relatively narrow space for the nib to swing. This may also be one of the important reasons for Su Dongpo's book style, which is left stretching and right shrinking, left showing and right dying, and short strokes. This writing has its advantages: the lines must be flat, refreshing and smooth.
Huang Tingjian's criticism of Su Shi is different, and there is some truth. But if you are not a "stone toad", you may not have the characteristics of Su Shi.
