Wei was trained by his father to practice calligraphy when he was young. He started with Ou Yangxun's Jiucheng Palace in the Tang Dynasty, then studied Zhong Shaojing's Ling Fei Classic with a hard pen, ran calligraphy and learned from Zhao Ti. His calligraphy is fluent and lively, and his structure is dignified and rigorous.
In recent years, his works have won prizes in hard-pen calligraphy competitions at all levels. He has edited and published Zhao Mengfu's Hard-pen Calligraphy, Zhong Shaojing's Hard-pen Calligraphy, New Curriculum Standard Teaching Materials for Pupils to Write with Pens, Hard-pen Calligraphy of New Chinese Words in Primary Schools, Wang Xizhi's Hard-pen Calligraphy and Zhao Ti's Regular Script.
