There are many posts and questions and answers on the Internet about how to read, especially how to read quickly. What does this mean?
There are two explanations: first, everyone is very concerned about this problem and is eager to seek various ways to read quickly; second, after decades of schooling, teachers have been teaching us how to read, but they have not taught us How to read.
If you are sick, you need to seek medical treatment. Unfortunately, you cannot find a doctor to save you. Fortunately, Western education attaches great importance to reading teaching. There is a classic book on how to read, "How to Read a Book". Just like the title of the book, if you study it carefully, you can cure your illness with medicine.
This book talks about a lot of content. This article first talks about "inspective reading" and teaches you how to read a book quickly.
1. What is inspection reading?
The author divides reading into four levels in the book: the first level is basic reading, the second level is inspection reading, the third level is analytical reading, and the fourth level is thematic reading. Basic reading emphasizes the ability to read a sentence, which means having the ability to decipher words. There is no need to say more here.
As the second level of inspection reading, it is to quickly read a book in a relatively short period of time and grasp the main content of a book. It can be said to be a type of systematic skimming. Art.
The skimming emphasized here is not that you read a book casually or haphazardly. It has some methods to follow. Its biggest feature is that it emphasizes understanding "What is this book about?" and "What is this book talking about?" in a short period of time. "What is the structure of this book? What content does it contain?"
2. Why do we need to conduct inspection reading?
We often encounter this situation: after hearing someone recommend a book, we really want to read it, but we are afraid that it will be useless after reading it; or we are worried that we will encounter a bad book and read it in vain. It's a waste of time; or maybe you know it's a good book and you can learn something from it, but your reading time is limited.
In this case, you'd better try review reading, which can not only quickly let you understand the theme of a book to determine whether it is worth reading, but also allow you to quickly learn what you think of from the book. knowledge.
3. How to develop the ability to examine reading?
There are two types of inspection reading. In fact, they are two aspects of the same thing. Skilled readers can use both steps at the same time, but beginners must proceed step by step.
Inspective reading one: systematic skimming or rough reading
The first stage of skimming is simple and easy to learn, divided into six steps:
(1 ) Read the title page first, and then read the preface if it is in order. Pay special attention to the subtitle, or other related descriptions or purposes, or the author's special angle of writing to understand the theme of the book.
(2) Study the contents page and have a general understanding of the basic structure of the book.
(3) If there is an index in the book, you should also review it and quickly evaluate the scope of topics covered by the book, as well as the types of books and authors mentioned, etc. If you find important Vocabulary, you can read more content.
(4) Read the publisher’s introduction, roughly read the promotional text on the book cover, and see who recommends it. I usually like to put this step in the first step.
(5) According to the table of contents, select a few chapters that appear to be closely related to the topic. Especially if these chapters have summary instructions at the beginning or end, read these instructions carefully.
(6) Finally, open the book, flip around, read one or two paragraphs, or read a few pages in a row, but not too many, pay special attention to the two or three pages at the end of the book, generally The author will summarize the important points in the book at the end.
After completing the first four steps, you can basically judge whether you need to read this book carefully. If you feel you need to learn more, then complete the last two steps. After these six steps of skimming, you have completed the first form of inspection reading. This will take a few minutes, maybe an hour at most, and you'll basically know a lot about this book.
Inspectional Reading 2: Superficial Reading
The second stage of inspection reading requires you to read the book from beginning to end as quickly as possible. The rule is, don't try to understand the meaning of every sentence, and just skip what you don't understand.
The above are the two steps of reviewing reading, and they are also ways to quickly finish reading a book.
After inspection and reading, you will basically understand the general content of a book, which is also ready for the third level of analytical reading. At the same time, inspection reading is also an important method of the fourth level of reading, which we will discuss next time.
