Creation background
This poem was written by Li Bai after he left the Hanlin Academy. It was written in four years (745) and five years (746). In the third year of Tianbao reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (744), Li Bai was pushed out by powerful people in Chang 'an, released from Beijing and returned to his hometown in Donglu (now Shandong). Then set foot on the journey of roaming again. This poem describing the dream trip of Tianmu Mountain was written when Li Bai was about to leave eastern Shandong for wuyue.

The ideological content of this poem is quite complicated. After Li Bai left Chang 'an, he suffered political setbacks and was depressed and resentful mentally. There is no way out in the real society, but we can only seek liberation from the illusory celestial world and the mountains far away from the secular world. This kind of seclusion thought seems to be depressed, but it can't be erased. To some extent, it shows that Li Bai has got rid of the bondage of the secular in spirit.
