"Rain in the Wutong" is a masterpiece by the playwright Bai Pu of the Yuan Dynasty.
The full name of "Wutong Rain" is "Tang Minghuang's Autumn Night with Wutong Rain". The title of the play is taken from the poem "The peach and plum blossoms bloom in the spring breeze, and the sycamore leaves fall in the autumn rain" in Bai Juyi's "Song of Everlasting Sorrow". The script is based on "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow" by Chen Hong of the Tang Dynasty. "Wutong Rain" is a historical drama depicting the love story of Tang Minghuang and Yang Guifei. It is famous for its rich lyricism, mellow poetic flavor and gorgeous diction.
Bai Pu (1226-?) was originally named Heng and given the courtesy name Renfu. Later, he changed his name to Pu, also given the courtesy name Taisu and his nickname was Langu. Han nationality, their ancestral home is Chizhou (near Hequ in present-day Shanxi), and later moved to Zhending (present-day Zhengding County, Hebei). In his later years, he lived in Jinling (present-day Nanjing) and remained in office throughout his life. He was a famous writer, composer, and dramatist in the Yuan Dynasty. Together with Guan Hanqing, Ma Zhiyuan, and Zheng Guangzu, he was known as the Four Great Masters of Yuan Opera. The main representative works include "Tang Minghuang's Autumn Night with Wutong Rain", "Pei Shaojun's Horse on the Wall", "Dong Yueying's Story of the Flower Moon on the East Wall", etc.
