Persuade to learn poetic classical Chinese

Encouraging Learning is the first work of Xunzi, which systematically discusses the purpose, significance, attitude and methods of learning. This paper extracts four paragraphs from middle school Chinese textbooks, focusing on the significance of learning and the attitude that should be adopted when learning. Persuasion means exhortation and encouragement. In the Tang Dynasty, Yan Zhenqing also wrote a poem "Encouraging Learning". In 2007, Asahi TV in Japan broadcasted a TV series called "Persuading Learning".

The original text of Persuasion

Mr. Wang said: I can't learn. Green is taken from blue, and green is blue; Ice, water, but colder than water. The wood is straight to the middle (zhòng) rope, and the winding (róu) is the wheel, and its curve (qū) is in the middle; Although there is a storm, let it be. Therefore, the wood is straight by the rope, the gold is sharp, the gentleman is knowledgeable, and he saves himself every day, so he knows clearly without fault. Think all day long, it is better to learn it in a moment; I've tasted it and I'm looking forward to it. Let's go hiking. Climb a trick, the arm does not lengthen, but the person you see is far away; Call with the wind, the sound does not add disease, but the listener is obvious. Those who cheat horses are not good enough, but cause thousands of miles; A man who pretends to be a boat can't swim, but he can't swim. The life of a gentleman is the same, and the goodness lies in personal leave. Accumulated soil becomes mountains, and the wind and rain are prosperous; The water drops merged into the ocean and the dragon was born; Accumulate goodness into virtue, the gods are complacent, and the sacred heart is prepared. Therefore, if you don't accumulate (kuǐ) steps, you will travel a thousand miles; If you don't accumulate small streams, you won't be a river. Miracle can't jump ten steps; This is a great contribution to the success of Ma Xu. Perseverance, rotten wood can't be carved; Perseverance makes the stone open (Lu). Earthworms do not have the advantages of minions, and their bones and muscles are strong. They eat the earth and drink the yellow land with their hearts. The crab kneels six times and pinches twice. It's not that the snake hole has no sustenance, it's also impetuous.

Learned and cultured people say: learning cannot stop. Indigo is extracted from bluegrass, but its color is darker than bluegrass. Ice is condensed from water, but it is cooler than water. The wood is straight enough to conform to the straight ink line. If the wheel is bent by fire roasting, the curvature of the wood will reach the standard of compasses. Even if it is dried by the wind and sun, it will not be straight again, because it has been processed like this. Therefore, wood can be straightened after being measured with ink lines and processed with auxiliary tools, and metal products such as swords can be sharpened after being polished on grindstones. A gentleman can learn extensively and check himself every day, then he will be wise and have no mistakes in his behavior. I used to think all day, but I didn't get a moment's study; I used to look at my heels, but I didn't look so wide when I climbed high. Climbing up and waving, the arm has not become longer, but people can see it in the distance; Shouting with the wind is not louder, but the listener can hear it more clearly. With the help of horses and chariots, people can reach thousands of miles away without quick steps; People who paddle by boat may not be good at swimming, but they can cross the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. The essence of a gentleman is no different from that of ordinary people, but he is good at using foreign things. Earth and stone pile up into mountains, and the wind and rain start from here; The accumulated water flows into the abyss, where the dragon was born; Only by accumulating good deeds and cultivating noble moral character can human wisdom be formed and saints' thoughts be (also) possessed. Therefore, there is no way to reach a place thousands of miles away without accumulating half a step; Without the accumulation of tiny flowing water, there is no way to merge into the rivers and seas. Running a horse is less than ten paces; A bad horse can walk for ten days, and its success lies in its constant walking. Carve an object but give up in the end. If you insist on carving, stones can also be carved successfully. Earthworms don't have sharp claws and strong bones and muscles, but they can eat the soil and drink the spring water. A crab has six legs and two crab pincers. (But) without the caves of snakes and eels, it has nowhere to live, because it is impetuous.

"Encourage Learning" (Tang Dynasty) Yan Zhenqing's "Three Lights and Five Chickens" is the time for men to study. Teenagers only know how to play, but don't know how to study hard. When they are old, they regret why they didn't know how to study hard when they were young. Note: The cock crows at dawn. Black hair-youth, refers to teenagers. Whitehead-people are old, referring to the elderly. Midnight is the best time for boys to study every day. When I was a teenager, I only knew how to play and didn't know how to study hard. When I was old, I regretted why I didn't know how to study hard when I was young. This poem warns us that if we don't study hard when we are young, it will be too late to study when we are old. Commentary: It means hardworking people, diligent students, still working and studying in the middle of the night, and the lights are still on in the middle of the night. After turning off the lights and lying down for a short rest, the chickens crow at the fifth watch, and these hardworking people have to get up and be busy again.
