Reflections on Sleeping People [Spanish] Aleixandre Merlo

Charming night, among the birds.

What's the sweet voice singing names in the sky?

Wake up! No shadow, no fate,

A bright moon sings in the dim light, thinking of you.

The sky penetrated by light and split by an axe

It's raining, there are no stars, and blood falls on a corpse.

The revelation of fate is calling.

A creature that sleeps forever under the busy sky.

Wake up! This is the world, its music. Please listen to me.

The earth flies warily, intoxicated with color and desire,

* * * Naked, naked, radiant,

The priestess of Dionysus revealed her beautiful heart,

Blue blood vessels, plump and shiny.

Look! You can't see a charming thigh moving forward!

A victorious figure, a suit full of stars.

The wet blue wind is beating against the earth.

Flying and squeaking?

Can you hear the phone at night? Ah, sleeping people

A poem that can't be praised at all, raise a sweet glass;

Ah, dear star, the wine in the sky will bring you.

My lips will suck you, my throat forever.

Burning with your wisdom, my eyes are shining gently.

Ah, sleeping people, dead people, dead people,

The whole night shines on me, illuminating your dreams.

Give me all the madness, and all your shiny lace!

But, no, you are as silent as death, like a rocky moon,

On the ground, quietly, there is no cemetery.

Curtains, feathers and moonlight nights

Take you, unburied people, flying in the air.

Melo won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1977 for his works "inheriting the tradition of Spanish lyric poetry, absorbing the style of modern schools and describing the situation of human beings in the universe and today's society". Despite winning Nobel Prize in Literature, he is still a controversial figure. The main reason is that people are not easy to understand his poems, and even his loyal admirers have made different interpretations of his poems. Perhaps his poems are rich in polysemy, which is difficult to be summarized by one explanation, and his style and theme are constantly changing, so it can be said that each explanation has its rationality. Influenced by Freudianism, his poems are full of subconscious associations and fantastic images, with a mysterious and dark color. This poem is also full of rich images, and we can only choose one way to interpret it for readers.

The "sleeping people" in the poem refer to those modern people who are trapped by reason in real life and lose the artistic charm of perception. Nietzsche discovered the Dionysian spirit in Greek culture when he reflected on the pre-Socratic culture in The Birth of Tragedy. Rational spirit and Dionysian spirit (irrational spirit) were originally two balanced aspects in Greek culture, but in the later social and historical development, irrational spirit gradually declined due to the influence of scientific and technological rationality and other factors. This is especially true in modern society, where the Dionysian spirit is completely buried. Calling the sleeping people to wake up in the poem can be understood as that in the modern society dominated by scientific rationality, people need the irrational Dionysian spirit suppressed or even buried by rational spirit to balance the spiritual world of modern people. These "creatures that sleep forever in the sky" need Dionysus to save them. When the poet was a child, his family moved to Malaga, a small town rich in grapes in southern Spain. We have reason to speculate that people there are also keen on brewing wine and love wine. Influenced by the living environment, poets who grew up in Sri Lanka have special feelings for Dionysus.

The first section creates a scene with strange images and rich meanings. "The sky penetrated by light and split by an axe" implies the birth of Dionysus. Legend has it that Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Semele, Princess of Thebes. Tianhou was jealous of Semele, so she became her nanny and encouraged her to meet Zeus. Zeus failed to meet the princess's requirements and showed the appearance of Thor. As a result, Semele was burned to death and Zeus saved Dionysus. As an adult, he wandered around with the god of the forest. In the process of wandering, he taught farmers to make wine, so he became a Dionysian, and wine was also "blood". Wherever Dionysus goes, music, singing and binge drinking follow him. He and his followers laughed wildly and drank, danced and sang casually. Therefore, his arrival is accompanied by "music", and intoxicated people are "intoxicated with color, desire,/* * * their bodies, and they are radiant without clothes".

The second section "A charming thigh is advancing" implies that when Zeus rescued Dionysus, he was not yet full-term, so the gods sewed him in his thigh. Legend has it that when he was born, Hermes, the animal god, delivered the baby with clothes in his hand, and the three Palka goddesses who were in charge of life and death prayed for him. After birth, Dionysus sang "hymns" and urged people to "raise their sweet glasses".

The third section, "My lips will suck you forever, my throat/burning with your wisdom, and my eyes shining with gentle light", wrote the wonderful feeling brought by wine. Wine can bring people soul, thus "burning wisdom", while people who drink will be gentle and radiant. Dionysus not only has intoxicating power, but also gives people joy and love, which is very infectious and makes people "crazy".

But unfortunately, "you are as silent as death, like a rocky moon/on the ground, as silent as a mouse, and there is no cemetery". The fourth section shows that Dionysian spirit is difficult to revive in modern society. Perhaps, only in dreams, only at night, you are the one who has not been "buried" by reason, can "take you" and "fly in the air" and enjoy irrational intoxication.

When the poet won Nobel Prize in Literature, he said, "A poet, a poet in the true sense, will always be an enlightener. Essentially, he is a prophet, a prophet. However, his prediction is certainly not about the future, but may be related to the past: it is a prediction that transcends time and space. Poet-illuminator, aiming hand of light, warning of mankind. A poet is the master of a sesame seed. In a mysterious sense, it can be said that he is the owner of words about his own destiny. " This poem is beautiful and smooth, full of fantasy, which combines romanticism and surrealism, and "illuminates" a spiritual dilemma of modern people with a plain and calm narrative.
