Think back before you rise, and remember when you succeed. Because of the late Ding Ning, the stars gather autumn wind.
The background of this poem is that when Zhuge Liang lived in seclusion in Longzhong, he told his master that he would return to Longzhong to retire after he became famous. However, after being defeated by Wu Dong in the battle of Yiling, Liu Bei fled to Baidicheng. Before he died, he entrusted Zhuge Liang with his young sons, Liu Chan and Han Shu, and asked him to explore the Central Plains, destroy Cao Wei and restore the Han Dynasty. In order to fulfill Liu Bei's last wish, Zhuge Liang gave up his ambition of seclusion, became the prime minister of Shu Han, presided over the state affairs, and sent troops to the Northern Expedition many times. During the Sixth Northern Expedition, Zhuge Liang died of overwork while stationed in Wuzhangyuan.
This poem also attracted the attention of the Japanese poet Doi Doi. With the last sentence of this poem as the topic, he created a long poem "Stars Falling in the Autumn Wind and Five Bird", which chanted Zhuge Liang's life. This long poem is divided into twelve chapters, with sixteen five-character poems in each chapter, totaling 192 sentences. This long poem describes Zhuge Liang's mental journey from the mountain in Longzhong to the death of Wuzhangyuan, as well as his feelings and comments on Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Sima Yi.
