The ancient European pastoral poetry was first created by Theocritos (310?-245? BC). He handed down twenty-nine poems. These poems describe the beautiful rural life and natural scenery of Sicily, which are fresh and lovely. The pastoral poetry of ancient Greece had a great influence on later European poetry with aristocratic tendencies. Pastoral poetry in ancient China refers to poetry that sings about pastoral life, mostly based on rural scenery and the labor of farmers, shepherds, fishermen, etc. After the great poet Tao Yuanming of the Eastern Jin Dynasty created the pastoral poetry style, the pastoral poetry in Tang and Song poems mainly became poems about pastoral life written by reclusive scholars and officials who retired from officialdom and settled in the countryside. Pastoral poetry and frontier fortress poetry are both known as the two major schools of poetry during the Kaiyuan and Tianbao years of the Tang Dynasty. The former is tranquil and simple, while the latter is vigorous and heroic.
