Shelley (1792- 1822) is a famous English romantic poet in the 9th century. He has written many famous poems such as Prometheus Liberated, ode to the west wind and Ode to a Lark. Shelley was expelled from Oxford University for writing an article about the necessity of atheism, and then he eloped with a girl because her father forced her to go to school. Shelley thinks that this is "persecution" against her, and his action is a kind of "hero saving the United States". This girl is his first wife, Harriet.
Shelley was a fighter who opposed oppression and pursued freedom. He distributed leaflets in Ireland against British colonial rule in Ireland. After returning to London, he devoted himself to various activities against power and became a disciple of radical political philosopher godwin. He believes that marriage is also an oppressive system, and loveless marriage is immoral.
He had an affair with godwin's eldest daughter, Mary, and eloped to France with her, which led to her suicide. After returning to London, the court considered him immoral and refused to award him custody of the children. In desperation, he married Mary and moved away, spending the rest of his short life in Switzerland and Italy.
To-is a love poem dedicated to a friend's wife. In Pisa, Italy, Shelley and his wife established a deep friendship with a group of British people living in Italy, including the poet Byron, and formed a famous "pizza social circle". Shelley is especially fond of Edward Williams and his wife Jenny.
This is a retired officer who served in India. His wife is beautiful, elegant and charming. Shelley admired her and wrote many beautiful lyric poems for her. This poem "To-"is one of them. The first two paragraphs of the poem mainly expound Shelley's love for Jenny, but this kind of love can't be called "love", because love is so tacky that it is often "profaned" and "defiled".
The last two paragraphs of the poem aim to define his feelings for her: since this feeling is not love, what is it? Shelley said that this is like a believer's love for God, a kind of piety, a kind of love without carnal desire. She is like a star, he is like a moth, and feelings are like "the moth's longing for starlight,/the night's longing for dawn." Here, Shelley raised her love for Jenny to a religious level, reminding people of the moment when Dante met Bay Atteridge in Paradise: it was a pure moment, a moment to get rid of distractions, full of reverence, but perfect.
