Interview with Master Lan Ruo

Looking for violet rain alone and crossing the white sand beach.

All the way into the scattered snow, several peaks are cold.

Monks in the mountains like tourists, and pavilions are for people to see.

After singing, the clothes are brushed away, and the bell stays outside the cloud. Yan Yu praised Cang Huawei's most famous teacher in later generations. He used Zen as a metaphor for poetry and put forward some incisive opinions on poetry creation. Although he made mistakes in Zen and poetry, he did some research on Buddhism. He not only contacted Buddhist disciples, but also paid close attention to them. This poem is about him crossing the beach, wearing a pine forest, stepping on the snow, braving the cold, wading through mountains and rivers, and going into the mountains alone to find a monk with fame and fortune.

The first couplet "looks for Qinglianyu alone and crosses the white sand beach." The poet set out alone and went to the temple to find his respected beneficiary. The word "independence" describes the poet's detachment and freedom. He is a loner, physically and mentally free, and has nothing to worry about. "Search" means that Shang Yi's residence is secluded and hard to find, so it is necessary to "search". Violet is a kind of blue lotus. Its leaves are long and wide, blue and white, like human eyes, so it is often used as a metaphor for Buddha's eyes. Qinglianyu refers to a temple. "Walking through the white sand beach" implies that you may have walked a long way and crossed the river. "White Beach" is more with less, representing all kinds of terrain.

Zhuan Xu "all the way into the scattered snow, several peaks are cold." When the poet walked to the pine forest, he found a path leading to the forest, overlooking the peaks, covered with cold and sending out chills. "All the way" is sparsely populated, and there is only one path leading to a secluded place. Use the word "Jin" to explain the narrow road. Under the snow-covered pine forest, a path twists and turns, and people get in. Just like a "cold mountain cedar map", the proportional relationship between cedar and path is handled properly.

"Monks like tourists, and pavilions are for people to see." In such a secluded place, few people visited it. No one must have been here on this cold winter night. Today, when the poet arrived, the monk was overjoyed and quickly showed the guests around his temple. While sightseeing, the two men recited poems, immersed in the comfort of visiting the pavilions in the mountains.

"Go away and brush your clothes, the bell will linger outside the clouds." On a whim, the poet exhausted his wandering power, waved his sleeves smartly and set foot on his way home. It seems that the poet is not attached to the outside world or friendship. After the farewell, his heart was empty, neither happy nor worried. Only the bell behind me echoed, intermittently, as if floating out of the sky, and as if floating into people's hearts, so quiet and far away.

Poets come through the snow, but they do whatever they want, whether they stay or not. Temples, beaches, pine trees and peaks are all natural. There is nothing in poetry that is not about scenery, and there is nothing that is not about the poet's calm and indifferent mind. "Without words, it is romantic" is also the samadhi of Zen.

Generally, poetry critics think that Yan Yu is "of high quality", but his poems are "dedicated to Wang Meng" and "limited in thought and lacking in talent". This poem also draws lessons from the elegant style, cold atmosphere and quiet artistic conception of Wang and Meng's poems, turning static into dynamic, and the virtual and the real coexist. Literally, "independence", "green", "white", "cold", "twilight" and "disability" all give people a chilly feeling; Violet, white sand, pine snow, mountain monk, pavilion and clock are isomorphic into an elegant whole. "All the way into the snow" skillfully turns the scenery into emotion. This is a static winding mountain road. Use the word "into" to describe, there will be dynamic and emotional. "A few peaks lead to cold dusk" is about a quiet environment. The poet felt the cold. It came and went without a trace, but now it seems to be rising from the snow-covered mountain top in the sunset. If it is in a lively occasion, can you have this subtle feeling? The bell at the end is particularly impressive. This is a way to bond feelings with scenes. In the author's view, the highest beauty of poetry lies in "the antelope hanging in the horn, without trace" and "thorough and delicate, and cannot be parked together, such as the sound in the air, the color in the phase, the moon in the water, the image in the mirror, and endless words." In other words, poetry creation should not be too realistic and incisive in artistic expression, but should give people an indescribable aesthetic feeling and endless aftertaste space. Judging from this poem, especially the conclusion, the author is trying to practice his own theory.
