Zhang Junshi's poems in punishments are lively but not flashy, and he likes to satirize Tao without cutting it. His followers are all good poets in the Tang Dynasty!

This article was written in Li Qing, Song Renzong for three years (1043). Wang Anshi was the judge of Huainan and ruled Yangzhou. That year, he returned to his hometown Linchuan temporarily on business, and met the son of Zhang, a punishments department. At the request of Yan Bo, he wrote a preface for Zhang's poems. In the preface, Wang Anshi affirmed Zhang's poems and his character of "self-control without pollution". At the same time, I use this preface to express my literary ideas and criticize the poetic style of Quincy infiltrated in the early Song Dynasty.
Kunxi style was popular in the early Song Dynasty, imitating the famous poet Li Shangyin, which was characterized by imitating Li Shangyin in form, blindly copying Li Shangyin's poems, allusions and words, and lacking true feelings. This poetic feeling was just right for the bachelor's degree in pavilions and pavilions at that time, as well as the prosperous court environment. The imperial court also used this to select scholars, and valued teachers and friends until Ouyang Xiu led the poetry circle in the Northern Song Dynasty and swept away the gorgeous poetic style of Kunxi style. The young Wang Anshi was born in Ouyang Xiu's family, and he hated the gorgeous style, so he wrote this Preface to Poems of Zhang Punishment Department.
The first part of this paper focuses on the evaluation of Zhang's poems, that is, "Yan but not Yan, and likes to satirize Tao without carving", that is, Zhang's poems are vivid in image, clear in language and rich in content but not Yan. He praised Zhang's punishments and said, "His followers are good poets in the Tang Dynasty!" Zhang Jun was really a poet in the Tang Dynasty! This kind of evaluation uses metaphor, because the author here affirms that Zhang Xingsi is good at learning Tang poetry, and also lays the groundwork for criticizing the poet for leading the study of Tang poetry into the abyss of formalism. The style is subtle and euphemistic, not straightforward and harsh.
The second part is the main part of the full text, in which the author severely criticizes the influence of Kunxi style poetry on contemporary poetry. First of all, the leaders of Kunxi School, Zhang Jun, Yang Yi and Liu Jun, were all from the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty. At that time, it was "Yang and Liu Yiwen's ci impressed the contemporary era, and scholars were fascinated by their original ci, but were too lazy to copy it". The last five sentences succinctly and forcefully summarize the characteristics of Quincy's style. Scholars lost their way in the Kunxi style, indulged in this flashy poetic style all day, and tried their best to imitate it, so that Kunxi style prevailed in the world. Then the article turns to Zhang Jun. In the poetic world where Kunxi style prevails, there are already writers with literary thoughts like Zhang Jun who have written works that are completely opposite to Kunxi style, sweeping away the wealth and glitz of Kunxi style and returning to the real realm of simplicity and no empty words. There is a saying that "there are few people who have strong self-control and lead an honest and clean life." Your poems are not lonely, but keeping clean is a sin? "From the author's heart, he sincerely and unreservedly praised Zhang Shi for not being influenced by Quincy's poetic style, getting out of the mud without being defiled, and adhering to the correct principles of poetry creation.
Since ancient times, a person's character can be seen from his articles, so the author associates Zhang Jun's character with Zhang Shi. Because "a poet is where his ambition lies", poetry expresses his ambition, and "the ambition of observing the monarch" can reveal Zhang Jun's character. He must be a gentleman who is self-disciplined and incorruptible, and an upright poet who is consistent in words and deeds. In the second paragraph, the author severely criticized the poetic style of Tiao theoretically, and praised Zhang's insistence on the correct creative path, thus clearly expressing his own literary views.
This article is prominent in the center, clear in context and coherent, showing the concise and straightforward style of Wang Anshi's prose.
