Ma Zhiyuan's poetry works are not numerous, but his artistic achievements are quite significant. His Sanqu works are famous for their lyricism, beautiful and fresh language, and profound and far-reaching artistic conception, which reflect the author's superb artistic talent and profound literary accomplishment. The most famous of Ma Zhiyuan's poems is "Thoughts of Autumn in the Clear Sands of Heaven". This poem uses scenery to express feelings and describes the scenery of autumn dusk very vividly:
Withered vines, old trees, dim crows, small There are bridges and flowing water, and there are people's houses. The ancient road has a westerly wind and a thin horse. The sun sets in the west, and the heartbroken people are at the end of the world. The first three sentences of this poem describe nine images, each of which has a desolate emotional color. Through the combination and superposition of these images, the author creates a sad atmosphere and expresses the author's longing for his hometown and relatives.
The last sentence, "Heartbroken people are at the end of the world", pushes this feeling of longing to a climax, making the artistic conception of the whole poem more profound. Ma Zhiyuan was an opera writer, sanquist and essayist in the Yuan Dynasty. He was born into a wealthy and well-educated family. When he was young, he was keen on seeking fame. It seems that he once presented poems to the prince, Borjijin Zhenjin, and became an official because of it. Later, he probably died because of Borjijin Zhenjin's death. He left Beijing and served as the provincial governor of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Later, he participated in the "Yuanzhen Shuhui" during the Yuanzhen period (early 1295-early 1297). He seemed to live in seclusion in Hangzhou in his later years, and finally died of illness in the first year of Zhizhi (1321) to Taiding Yuan Dynasty. Year (1324).
